An archetype is an energy pattern of expression or thought.

These universal thought forms or patterns are available and active from birth. As an expression of the collective unconscious, they manifest at many levels in life. Imagine the center of the earth, which is filled with molten lava. As this energy moves out, it solidifies into the ground you walk on. Your inner thoughts work the same way; they move outward and solidify into actions and habits that define your life. Your personal world is created by thoughts, words and beliefs. A repeat pattern is channeled into an archetypal pattern. These patterns either work for you or they don’t. Awareness of which archetypes are active in  your life allows you to make choices that empower you. For instance, if you are in the Shadow Orphan, the fear of being alone will influence your choices and decisions.  Your choices will be based on making sure you stay with the group of family, co-workers and friends. To avoid being alone, you begin to live your life by their ideas, rules,  and regulations — often giving up your personal power to do so.  The Illuminated Orphan is comfortable outside or inside the group. She listens to her own intuitional wisdom. 

Using the archetype cards has become a vital part of my practice. It is like using short-hand that allows each person to see clearly where they are gaining or losing their spirit and personal energy. I chose 48 archetypes that I felt were the most common. Dorothy Rittal-McIntyre is the artist who created the cards. The images on each of the cards represent the illuminated and the shadow aspects of each archetype. The cards are created symbolically rather than a specific image; this allows your own energy to flow through the cards and increase your understanding.
